West Hollywood Women's Leadership Conference & Network Mini-Film Festival

  • West Hollywood City Council Chambers 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. West Hollywood, CA 90069 (map)

Join the City of West Hollywood's Women's Leadership Conference & Network's Mini-Film Festival for a special evening short films directed by women directors.

The Film Festival in collaboration with the West Hollywood Human Rights Speakers Series and to commemorate National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, will screen Wilhemina's War, the story of Wilhemina Dixon, an uneducated daughter of sharecroppers who becomes a force in her family's fight for survival from HIV and AIDS. In much of America, progress in HIV/AIDS treatment and improvement in education may suggest the worst is behind us but every year 50,000 Americans are still diagnosed with the virus that causes AIDS.  Astonishingly, nearly half of them live in the South, where the AIDS epidemic has taken root in rural communities, and is one of the leading causes of death among black women.

The screening will be followed by a panel about the importance of education and advocacy about this issue as well as the impact of media.  The panel discussion will be moderated by Jan Robinson Flint, Executive Director, Black Women For Wellness, and panelists Traci Bivens-Davis, Community Engagement Specialist, REACH LA; Gerald Garth, Outreach Coordinator and Media, Communications and Public Relations Coordinator, Black AIDS Institute and Black Treatment Advocates Network Los Angeles; and Carolina Groppa, Producer, Autism in Love

The evening will also include the launch of PLATFORM, a screening curated by women for women to showcase emerging female filmmakers. We will be showing short films by Christina Acevedo (Agatha Gone); Monica Ahananou (Rio Animation); Deb Clementine (The Looking Glass); Joie Estrella (Under The Mesquite); Nana Ghana (LA Women Rising); Gloria Maria Guadalupe Moran (The Unique Ladies); Erica Ortiz (Mis Match); Sylvia Saether (King of Norway); Arkasha Stevenson (Vessels).
